United States beat Spain
United States set date to play against the winner of semi-final match between Brazil and South Africa after beating Spain 2-0.United States made a miracle appearance to semi-final stage after beating Africa champions, Egypt 3-0, thanks to 3-0 Brazil win against Italy. Before beating Egypt, United States loss 3-1 to Italy and 3-0 to Brazil.
Two goals from Jozy Altidore and Clint Dempsey on 27th and 74th minutes stopped Spain registering 36 games unbeaten record. Spain levelled a 35 world record of unbeaten run with Brazil after beating South Africa and achieved a world record of 15 consecutive wins.
The European Champions tried all the tricks but efforts from USA defenders and goalie, Tim Howard denied Spain top scorers, David Villa and Fernando Torres.
The 27th goal by Altidore was the first goal Spain concede since April 1st against Turkey, when Semih Senturk scored. Before this game, Spain last loss was in November 2006 against Romania.
Quotes
“Sometimes, football is a funny thing. Sometimes you get lucky on certain occasions and we definitely rode our luck against the best team in the world. They are unbelievable.” said Howard
"We made a special point to close down Xavi, trying to force him to play the ball square or behind him so that he couldn't play any of those penetrating passes he is so good at," Bradley said
"Regardless of whether we play Brazil or the Bafana Bafana, the challenge will be great," U.S. coach Bob Bradley said.
"I think it just shows that we can compete with the best. Now we need to do it on a consistent basis," U.S. captain Carlos Bocanegra said.
"This is an accident, a little step backward," Spain coach Vicente del Bosque said. "We have to look forward with optimism."
"This win is huge for American soccer," Dempsey said. "This one is much sweeter because we were down and out, came back fighting."
